Councillor Don Palmer Providing Local Leadership & Working for You

Elected Members today enjoyed a tour of the Adelaide Showgrounds Market at the invitation of CEO Amanda Daniel.

I met Amanda last year in her first week as the new CEO of the Showgrounds market. Not long after that I introduced her to our Mayor, Lachlan Clyne. Since then I have been keen for the elected members to get to meet her and see what the market is doing. Today saw this happen.

As a regular patron and member of the Showgrounds market and knowing what they are doing for our community I was pleased that my fellow councillors have had a chance to see too what the market is all about.

That’s me on the far right, with the Mayor, Lachlan Clyne, in his pink jumper, my co-councillor Jenny next to the Mayor and Cr Hewitson on tleft of the Mayor.

In existence now for 5 1/2 years the market is bursting at the seems, struggling to keep up with the demand. The market is the largest of its type in the state, with all stall holders offering truly South Australian products.

Clearly the residents of this area (and beyond) are appreciating the value of truly fresh in season fruit and vegetables. So much so that Amanda and the Board of Management are surveying the feasibility of a mid week market to compliment what they are doing now. Their landlord, the Adelaide Showgrounds, is also keen to keep the market. They have guaranteed them a secure tenure into the future and is considering within it’s master plan a new location that will assist them to grow comfortably.

Another initiative being explored is donating the left over goods from a day at the market to charirty.

Congratulations Amanda. Your contribution to the community of the City of Unley is enormous and appreciated.
