Councillor Don Palmer Providing Local Leadership & Working for You

July 1 marks the introduction of measures to address the recommendations of the Coroner’s inquest into the Grange Golf Club roof collapse in 2002. Yes 10 years to start processes to avoid a re-occurrence.

The new roof truss legislation effective prescribes the following minimum number of inspections:

(a) A number of inspections equal to

66% of building rules consents issued over the course of the year for building work involving the construction of any roof framing where a licensed building work contractor is responsible for the relevant building work;

(b) A number of inspections equal to

90% of building rules consents issued over the course of the year for building work involving the construction of roof framing where a licensed building work contractor is not responsible for the relevant building work;

This is up from our previous policy commitment to inspect 70% of residential development.

This will put some pressure on our Building Team and we will have to resource them with additional equipment including a new vehicle. This will not be paid for under the legislation as there is no provision for cost recovery from developers. This means our rate payers pay for this service.
Unlike many Councils however, and because the City of Unley has historically maintained a high annual target level of inspections, the cost increase will not be like some councils.
