Councillor Don Palmer Providing Local Leadership & Working for You

As is my custom I awoke early today, Anzac Day not to celebrate my birthday but to commemorate and give thanks to those before who laid down their lives so that I might be free and be able to celebrate my birthday.

I attended the Anzac Day Dawn Service this morning at The Unley Memorial Gardens, on Unley Road and was astounded at the number who attended.

The numbers have always been good at Unley in my opinion. Generally we would attract 300 or so wishing to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. This morning it was so hard to determine the numbers. It was shoulder to shoulder. Talking with others afterwards the guesses ranged from 500 to 800 and even 1800.

Adding to the ceremony was the ringing of the bells at St Augustine’s Anglican Church across the road, marking the 80th anniversary of the dedication of the bells, on Anzac Day 1933.

Clearly the Anzac Spirit is alive and well.

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13
They shall not grow old ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………Lest We Forget!

Thank you too for the invitation from Goodwood Scouts & Guides to their Anzac Day breakfast. I normally attend the RSL Unley breakfast but was pleased to join the young scouts and guides, who earlier laid rosemary at the Cenotaph at Unley.

One of the heart warming things about Anzac Day ceremonies is to see the young people. It is for this reason I say that the Anzac tradition will never die.
