Below is the Council’s official press release on our winning the right again, as I reported yesterday, to host the Santos Tour Down Under.

The City of Unley is excited to have won its bid to host a stage start of the 2016 Santos Tour Down Under (TDU).

The Stage 2 Start of the TDU will be held on Adelaide’s premier retail strip, King William Road at the Opey Avenue intersection, on Wednesday, January 20 at 11am.

Unley Mayor Lachlan Clyne welcomed the news that the City of Unley would again host a stage of this major sporting event.

“The Tour has become a much-loved and well-attended event on Unley’s calendar for the past 15 years,” Mayor Clyne said.

“Local businesses and residents should be proud that we have once again been granted the honour of hosting a Stage of the Tour. It showcases our wonderful City and brings the community together to celebrate one of the world’s biggest cycling events.”

One of Adelaide’s most prestigious annual events, the hugely popular and successful Unley Gourmet Gala, will also be held again on the eve of Unley’s Tour Stage. The event is an opportunity for retailers and restaurants to showcase their finest gourmet produce, wine and fashion in a lively street party on Tuesday, January 19.

“King William Road will be buzzing with activity across the two days and we anticipate thousands of people will attend the festivities, providing a huge economic boost to the area,” Mayor Clyne said.

“The 2015 Gourmet Gala attracted more than 30,000 visitors and generated turnover in excess of $1 million for the City. We’ll now start seeking sponsorship to ensure the 2016 event is just as big a success.”
